I get to spend lots of time now doing technical support for my parents - upgrading my parents' internet connection to broadband tonight and then talking my mother through getting her new laptop set up. At some point, the fact I don't do desktop support will sink into my parents brain.

My parents know that I don't, but they still expect me to set up anything vaguely technical. My next job is their digital set top box. Problem is I usually do it without reading the manual, and without any apparent effort.

The hardest part of getting my parents onto broadband was disconnecting the dial-up cables. Mainly 'cause my Dad managed to get the phone cable wrapped around all the other cables, the desk and the radiator. And then piled filing cabinets and stuff on top of it underneath the desk.

After that, everything else was easy.
