So today has been a fun and interesting day. Got up, bought Xbox 360, went home, got changed, went to see Robert Lindsay in The Entertainer (bloody brilliant), came home, ate dinner, got my 360 onto my wireless network, onto Xbox live and connected to my laptop.

Now I'm going to go play with my new toy some more :-)

PS. Remember party at my place on 9th June

For any of you who are interested, JMS (J. Michael Straczynski) will be doing a signing at Forbidden Planet on 12th May at 1pm. Pass it on to anyone who might be interested.

Amazing how the simple act of just applying for jobs can make you feel so much better. :-)

Especially on a day where you went to buy a Mother's day card for your mother and remaining grandmother and suddenly realised you wouldn't be buying one for the recently deceased one. Felt like a big kick to the gut - which wasn't nice at 8am before I'd even had any coffee.

Even more so when I warned my colleagues I wasn't in a great mood because of this (seeing as apparently I've been an unreasonable bitch for the last month or so) - and the sort-of team lead reacted by laughing. Even if it was one of those nervous, "I don't know what to say to that" reactions, it's not quite the reaction I was expecting.

Yay!

So my new (and very shiny) laptop has arrived. Aside from booting it up and making sure any critical updates are loaded, I've managed to refrain from playing with it too much. It is now back in its box where it will stay until I get home this evening.

I am so looking forward to being able to sit on my sofa, watching tv and doing stuff on my computer :-D

So my laptop will be arriving tomorrow :-) Guess I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend ;-p

In other news, I will be at the pub tonight - I'm assuming the Railway is still preferred choice?

I'm going to be conspicuous by my absence for the next few weeks. Life is being particularly shitty and I'm not really in any kind of sociable mood.

So today is my first day back at work after having done whatever the heck it is I have done to my elbow. (Medical opinion is divided on what I've done and I beginning to think it's a little more serious than a sprain).

My reaction to today is mainly "Owwwwww" followed by "Damn that hurts" and then "Bugger". This means I will be having a somewhat shorter day than normal (about 2 hours shorter at this rate) as I don't think driving home in the dark and wet during the rush hour is going to help much.

It also doesn't help that I can't use the mouse with my right hand for any period longer than an hour so am having to use my left hand. This is leading to some confusion (mainly my brain going "OK, I used to be left-handed, then I've been right-handed for 25 years and now I seem to be going back to being left-handed again. Huh?")

My advice is to not fracture your elbow - having a long period of time off work is nice but not being able to do much is a complete nightmare.

So I went to the Fracture Clinic this morning to see exactly what I have to do (or not do) with my elbow.

According to the doctor (who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but at the clinic), it's not actually a fracture (or if it is, it's so small that he can't actually see it on the x-ray) but is a really bad sprain.  So I have to keep taking the pain-killers and use the sling but I don't need to be off work for quite as long.  I can't drive the car this week but I should be able to again soon.
turtledisc: (Default)
Apparently so, but only very slowly.  The requirement for one-handed typing is because I have a suspected radial head fracture in my right elbow.  It's going to take 6-8 weeks to heal and I'm going to need about a month off work.  This also means I can't drive so won't be at the pub (or indeed anywhere that I can't get to easily by public transport).

And all because some prat spilt their drink onto the highly polished dance floor at the Grand last night and I lost my footing.  Amazing how painful such a small injury can be!

(I'm only going to do this if enough people say they're going to come)

For those of you who remember me talking about a film crew being at one of the other blocks of flats in the complex I live in, I've actually found a synopsis of the show:

Time Of Your Life 2007, ITV1 – Comedy drama series starring Genevieve O'Reilly as Kate, who wakes at the age of 36 after 19 years in a coma to find everything has changed. With Robert Pugh, Geraldine James, Mark Bazeley and Jemima Roper. Written by Charlie Martin

Yep, I've just got back from seeing Casino Royale.

When I first started watching the Bond films (way back as a young child) my order of preference for the 3 actors (that I knew of at that point) that had played Bond was Connery, Moore, Lazenby (there's a very big gap between Moore and Lazenby - similar in size to the Grand Canyon).

Then Timothy Dalton was cast as the new Bond so that changed the order a little - Connery, Moore, Dalton, Lazenby.

I started getting into the mythos a little more and actually sat through the entirety of the spoof Casino Royale (quite how I don't know but I did it) and decided that I really wasn't going to let that anywhere near my preference list :-).  Before Brosnan was cast, my father and I would have quite intense discussions about what order the Bonds should be put in (we agreed on the placing of Connery and Lazenby but argued about Dalton and Moore) with him eventually telling me I really should start reading the books and then I'd change my mind.

Then Brosnan was cast and the order changed again - Connery, Brosnan, Moore, Dalton, Lazenby.

Then a couple of years later, I started reading the books (I've read all the Fleming Bond books and only have one short story to track down and I've read all of his.  I haven't decided on whether or not I want to start reading the non-Fleming books yet) and the order changed again - Connery, Brosnan, Dalton, Moore, Lazenby (I really hate it when my Dad's proved right).  Of course, by this point, I'm living in the US and have started getting all the Bond films on DVD - gotta love those special editions with loads of extras :-)  This means I'm watching and re-watching all the Bond films and confirms my order of preference.  I figure it's pretty much static at the top-end of the list - new Bonds will get added somewhere below Brosnan.

I was very open to the idea of Daniel Craig as Bond (if the worst thing you can say is his hair colour is wrong, then that really isn't an issue) but wasn't sure quite where he'd wind up going - I figured he'd probably go in somewhere around 3rd or so.  Turns out I was way wrong on that.  In a result that will probably be deemed sacrilege by other ardent Bond fans, I can't decide if he goes in above or below Connery - so for now the list is Connery / Craig, Brosnan, Dalton, Moore, Lazenby.

I absolutely love Casino Royale (except for the bit where the Aston Martin DBS is trashed - I almost shed a tear) and Daniel Craig is absolutely fantastic.  If you've read the book, you'll recognise the main elements and if you haven't, it's a very good Bond film to go see.  It's very dark and a lot more violent than I was expecting - this Bond kills because it's his job and doesn't lessen it with a quip (well, in a couple of places but not glaringly so).  He's the first Bond I've seen who actually has any kind of believable emotional response to killing someone and he does indeed grow as a character during the film - the Bond at the end of the film is a different animal to the one at the beginning.

So I recommend anyone who wants to go see an intelligent, entertaining film to go see this one (of course, it didn't hurt that you get to see quite a bit of Daniel Craig semi and completely nude - boy has he been working out).

Now I just need to decide when I want to go see it again - this will probably be one of the few films I go see more than twice in the cinema.

Colorado (one of the biggest right-wing conservative states) has elected a Democrat as Governor and now has more Democratic representatives than Republicans.  I'm in shock

There are times when it is absolutely fantastic to be proved right in your opinions of someone.

Background

Colorado Springs, CO has the highest number of headquarters for evangelical Christian groups in the US. One of these is the New Life Church that was led by Reverend Ted Haggart. Having listened / read some of this guy's opinions both directly from him and through the filter of some of my colleagues, I came to the conclusion that this guy was a fairly typical leader of one of these groups - a bigoted hypocrite who was as far from the original teachings of Jesus as could possibly be imagined.

Current Situation

Turns out I was right. After preaching about the evils of gays and gay marriage and how drugs will ruin your life, turns out he's in the best position to know. Seems he's been having sex once a month with a gay masseur in Denver for the last 3 years and bought methamphetamines from him. Of course, he started out denying all of it, then admitted he had visited the guy but only for a massage and then admitted he had bought drugs from the guy but never actually taken them. Now, in a statement read out to the church in Colorado Springs after being fired for "sexually immoral conduct", he states that he's "a deceiver and a liar" and "there is a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark and I've been warring against it my entire adult life".

Bet that statement's been causing some interesting comments in the LSI office in Colorado Springs (seeing as quite a few of them are members of that particular church). There are times (increasingly rare I will admit) that it's a real shame I had to leave.

Of course, the even greater hilarity in all of this is that Colorado is about to vote on whether gay marriage should be legal or not - and this guy was one of the main advocates for making it illegal.

As if having the entirety of the road structure around the flat dug up between the hours of 8pm to 6am wasn't enough this week, turns out there's going to be a crew here on Thursday and Friday filming interior and exterior shots at one of the flats in the complex.  They're going to be here between 12:30pm to 10:30pm with the vehicles etc arriving and leaving outside these times.  Guess I'm going to have fun trying to get in and out of the complex on Thursday.

So has anyone heard of this show?  It's called "The Time of Your Life". I've done a quick search for it but can't find anything that looks as though it would be relevant.

'Cause I really need to speak to him about a small snafu with tickets. He doesn't seem to be answering his phone (I'm assuming it doesn't work in the US), I haven't seen him on LJ recently and I don't have any other way of getting hold of him.

For those of you driving to the flat, I'm assuming you'll be coming from the Egham direction. See under the cut for directions.
Directions from Egham )
